Digging is like mining, sometimes explosives and heavy equipment are necessary. Most often digging is a job for picks and shovels. Then, as one gets closer to the fossil layer, smaller tools such as air hammers, chisels and finally dental picks are used. All the while, extreme care is taken not to damage the fossils and to map the parts discovered.
